I finally submitted to PostSecret. Just like a wander through the hackneyed lung that is GroupHug, there is only so long that a person can just watch without participating.
Like a lot of other people who send in (moderately) racy postcards, I wonder if mine will ever reach its destination. Now I know I'll be watching PostSecret for the next six weeks just to see if mine'll go up. But on principle, it will be printed.
I wish the same lovey-dovey free speechisms could apply to this, and, subsequently, this and this.
Tough to argue Freedom of Expression to people like this*. I'm not referring to Muslims as a group, by the way. I'm thinking about the same people who would consider a cartoon about Mohammed to be on par with a drawing of Hitler in bed with Anne Frank ("write this one in your diary, Anne") and Spielberg and Jackson "inventing" the Holocaust are explained by, as the Arab -European League says, "if it is the time to break Taboos and cross all the red lines, we certainly do not want to stay behind."
I know the purpose of these is to be inflammatory, and they sure do get the job done. I have every doubt that these guys read lefty jews' blogs for insight, and maybe I've played this card before, but I'm supposed to have eleven great aunts and uncles--and of course their children and their childrens' children. But they're all dead. They all died. My Bubbi survived but she sure as hell won't talk about it. Guess I don't have a sense of humour either.
The Italian word for today is contesto and it means context. Although for interest's sake, the Italian word for Holocaust is olocausto.
Notes:
*people like this: This is actually the most inflammatory expression in this post. It so immediately creates an Other that it incites anger--just what impression am I trying to create? I'm wary of any expression that means something different every time--like a woman who wears too many wigs--and this is no exception.
